February 13-17
I will be gone on Friday, February 17th for a meeting in the morning and a doctor's appointment in the afternoon. Mrs. Ellis, the sub who will be filling in for me when I have my baby, will be here.

Monday: This week we will begin writing the rough draft of our persuasive essays. On Monday, students will look at the components of a good introduction. They will combine statistics, quotes, and strong statements to create an interesting introduction.
Tuesday & Wednesday: Students will have two days to write the rough draft of their persuasive essays. By the end of class Wednesday, students should have four paragraphs completed.
Thursday: Today we will spend our class time writing conclusions. After discussing it in class, students will write the final paragraph of their essay. I would encourage you to look over your students work and give them feedback - areas where they can elaborate, questions they may need to address, or other areas where they could strengthen their writing.
Friday - We will continue preparing for the MSP today - students will have a reading selection (Eels) and a vocabulary packet. Both will be due on Monday at the start of class.

February 6-10
Happy Monday!
7LA:
In preparation for writing our persuasive essay, which will take place next week, students will spend this week fine tuning some different aspects of their persuasive technique. I have schedule this time for us to work and discuss their techniques in class while allowing them to complete any remaining research or interviews on their own time. I expect that all research and interviews are complete by this weekend and students will be expected to be ready to start writing next Monday morning.
Monday - Today we will discuss the use of transitions between thoughts and paragraphs. Students will have two worksheets to discuss in class and one page of independent work. They *should* finish in class and not have any homework tonight.
Tuesday - We will discuss the different types of arguments that can be used in a persuasive paper today - ethos, pathos, and logos. We will also look at their research and begin selecting facts, statistics, and quotes that will be the most effective evidence for their arguments.
Wednesday - We will discuss the importance of understanding both sides of an argument and including that information in the essay. Students will practice writing rebuttal statements to use in their writing.
Thursday - Today we discuss using strong statements to support ideas - we will have two worksheets that will help students identify strong and weak arguments.
Friday - We will be working on an MSP reading packet (Pioneer Life) and a vocabulary packet.

Weekly Update
Monday, January 23, 2012
January 23-27
Well, thanks to our winter wonderland out there, we are a few days behind schedule. We will be picking up today where we left off last week so some of this update may sound a bit redundant. If you have not already done so, please 'Like' Zillah Middle School Facebook page to get updates on delays and closures during this unpredictable weather. Here is the info for this week...
7LA:
Monday - Today we will move on from declarations to defending our positions with strong statements. Students will be given 'ridiculous' statements and will be challenged with creating statements to defend that position. All of this work is to prepare students for the persuasive writing assignment coming in the next few weeks.
Tuesday - Today we will begin the process of selecting and narrowing topics for our persuasive writing project. Students will select a topic from a topic list and begin developing a thesis statement. This work will drive the entire focus of their paper. We will discuss how to select a manageable topic and how the thesis statement will drive the content of their paper.
Wednesday - Today students will begin brainstorming for their persuasive writing. They will create a web of ideas that will help them create the framework of their papers.
Thursday - Today we will begin creating an outline (or skeleton) of the persuasive paper. Students will generate a list of research questions that will guide their research next week.
Friday - We will continue on with our MSP practice today and look at a reading selection and a piece of grammar review (concrete and abstract nouns).
BOOK REPORT INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND HERE.

Sorry this is a day late; I've been busy prepping for conferences and didn't get the update written before I left yesterday. With the winter weather we're having today, I'm not sure if conferences will be held tonight or not - the district is going to make that decision later on. I will try to post on Facebook and on the website as soon as I hear something. If conferences are canceled tonight we will make them up on a different day.

Weekly Update

January 9 - 13
Happy Monday!! Here is the update for this week...
7LA:
This week Language Arts class will be focusing on persuasive writing. We will spend some time looking at persuasive techniques and writing examples before students move on to practicing their own persuasive writing toward the end of the month. This is one of the forms of writing that is assessed on the MSP so we will spend quite a bit of time discussing it and practicing. Students will have a worksheet each day that covers the component discussed in class and will have a short writing activity for homework. I will try to give as much time as possible each day for students to work on this writing but I do expect many of them to have homework this week.
Monday - We will discuss point of view and how it can change the message of a piece of writing. For homework tonight, students need to write a brief retelling of a familiar fairy tale from a point of view that is different from the original.
Tuesday - Today we will discuss fact and opinion statements. Students will have 26 statements on their worksheet and will need to determine whether each is a fact or opinion.
Wednesday - We will spend today discussing propaganda and looking at some of the most common techniques used in advertising today. For homework, students will need to find an example of one of these
techniques as it is used in a print, online, or television advertisement. They will need to explain the ad, tell what technique is used, and decide if they believe it was effective or not.
Thursday - Today we will look specifically at war propaganda and discuss how war posters sent messages to the US public during WWII.
Friday - We will be working on MSP reading skills today. Students will have a packet in class (Centralia) and a vocabulary packet. We will complete the MSP packet in class and students will start the vocab during class but may have homework over the weekend.
