August 29 - September 2

Happy Monday!! I hope you all had a restful weekend as we head into the first full week of school. This week will be spent getting students familiar with myself and each other.

* Please note, all students are required to fill in their weekly planners for ALL classes - if you have questions about what they have for homework, please refer to these planners.

7th Language Arts (7LA):

Monday & Tuesday - We will be working on Me/We projects for the first two days this week. These posters are designed to help students get to know their peers and find others with similar interests. The information for this assignment can be viewed and downloaded here. Posters will be due on Wednesday at the start of class.

Wednesday - Students will spend the first portion of class presenting their Me/We posters with their partner. After presentations, we will do a 'Mind Up' activity. Mind Up is a program designed to help students learn about how their brain learns and stores information and also to help them develop strategies that will assist them with studying and taking tests. We will do these activities periodically throughout the year. This first lesson deals with learning the parts of the brain and understanding how the brain deals with stress and processing new information. I believe this information will be very helpful to students both in this class, and in their other content area classes.

Thursday - We will be setting up student portfolios today. Students keep an organized file of their work for this class and meet with me each semester to conference and discuss their progress and goals. We will spend this class period preparing the folders, becoming familiar with the various paperwork that goes along with them, and setting goals for first semester.

Friday: Students will spend the class period today working on their first writing sample called the Give Me 5 letter. Students will have a handout that explains what topics they need to cover in each paragraph. They will have the class period to work on in Friday but will be able to take it home and complete it over the weekend if needed. This assignment must be handwritten as it is also a baseline penmanship sample for my class.

Monday - We will be setting up student portfolios today. Student keep an organized file of their work for this class and meet with me each semester to conference and discuss their progress and goals. We will spend this class period preparing the folders, becoming familiar with the various paperwork that goes along with them, and setting goals for first semester.

Tuesday - Today we will spend the period completing a variety of baseline assessments for Social Studies. Students will take a continents and oceans quiz, an ancient civilization time line quiz, and a diagnostic test from our textbook. This information will help me decide what areas to focus on and what areas students are already familiar with.

Wednesday - Today we will discuss map reading skills and create a oceans and continents study guide for future tests. We will also begin discussing the routes ancient peoples used when traveling and settling around the world.

Thursday - Today we will begin our work in the textbook. Students will read pages 4-6 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts) about maps of the ancient world. Students will then read pages 6-11 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts).

Friday - We will start the day with a vocabulary worksheet to review from yesterday's reading section. Students will then read pages 12-17 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts).
